Profile

Subscribing to the principle that the old songs really are the best, the Gershwin Gang, a Manhattan-style jazz group, specialises in the well-known jazz songs from the 1920s and 1930s written by the Gershwin brothers, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and others, and made popular by Fred Astaire, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole and Sinatra.

This band's reputation has spread fast. In May 2000 they returned to 'The Royal Windsor Horse Show' where, following the previous year's success, they again performed in the presence of Her Majesty the Queen. Other recent highlights have included Ascot and the BBC's 'Royal Television Society Awards' as well as numerous private and corporate functions throughout England (London, the Midlands, Northwest, Northeast, Southwest, Southeast) as well as Wales and Scotland.

The band's basic trio line-up consists of piano/vocals (Selwyn Dorfman), double bass (Paul Stoloff) and drums, occasionally supplemented by Brigitte Escobar as guest vocalist and/or George Galway on saxophone/clarinet/flute.

The Gershwin Gang also present a lively and entertaining outdoor show set, suitable for town and county shows and festivals.

The Gershwin Gang is available for engagements throughout the U.K. and Europe (sometimes at short notice).

Testimonials:

'Thank you we had such a lovely day and a wonderful time away. The entertainment at the wedding provided by the Gershwin gang was wonderful. Everyone I have spoken to has said how much they enjoyed the band. Thank you very much, I will recommend you!'
Anna Sydor, Wedding,

''The Gerswhin Gang' were absolutely fantastic. Everyone commented on them! We had lots of hitches, which spoilt the day a little, including the hotel not setting up the band outside, as we'd arranged (Selwyn apologised and put a speaker outside so we could hear whilst the photos were being shot!) and the hotel not providing refreshments as arranged for the band (again, Selwyn was an absolute star and said it didn't matter and just to make sure it was not on our bill!). Things ran a bit late and Selwyn came over to me to say that he would carry on playing until all the guests had got through the receiving line, even though it was past the arranged times and they hadn't been fed and watered! I couldn't be more grateful to him; having had problems with the driver, hotel staff and DJ, it was his attitude and kindness that made all the difference. We were rushing about all day and had few moments that I remember well. One was when the band played my request 'Putting on the Ritz' and my mum and I having a dance. I'm told that all my aunties and my Grandma were having a whale of a time, sat by the fire in the room where the band were playing, singing along and reminiscing. Fantastic. Please thank them profusely from myself and my husband'.

'Thanks for all your help with booking the Gershwin Gang. They were an excellent addition to our wedding, arrived early, got set up with no fuss and played wonderfully. Would happily recommend them'.
