Real weddings

Amy and Dan got married at Pledgdon Barn in Essex, with a ceremony interspersed with romantic piano music and a reception with a rock and pop performance from London band The Fandangos, which included a very special first dance!

Amy & Dan

‘We had the same venue for both ceremony and reception - a beautiful converted barn. We both had always wanted to get married in a barn, and because we were getting married in December staying in one place appealed to us - no traipsing around in the cold for the guests or us!’

We were absolutely thrilled with the band and very pleased we had live music!

Pledgdon Barn is close to Amy and Dan’s family and friends, as well as being near to Stanstead airport. Even if it had snowed, getting to the venue would still have been easy!

‘The barn looked particularly beautiful in the winter.’ Amy and Dan used fairy lights and candles to create a magical atmosphere as the sun went down in the late afternoon, which she describes as, ‘Just gorgeous!’.

‘The invites had quite a rustic feel, using natural twine to tie them together, creams and gold and brown paper envelopes.’ They wanted to continue the rustic theme for the wedding: ‘We wanted to emphasise the natural beauty of the barn.’

‘The flowers were kept to cream colours, and there was a hint of navy blue with some berries in the flowers to match Dan’s navy blue suit and my bridesmaids.’

image

‘We are both graphic designers so we did a lot of the reception bits ourselves. I made everyone a menu that was tied around a napkin with a ribbon, and chocolate heart lollies with name tags for the place settings.’

image

‘The children had personalised brown paper bags filled with toys and goodies, and every table had game cards to keep them occupied during the boring bits!’

The adults also had game cards, with 70s, 80s and 90s music and TV trivia.

‘We had a table of retro sweets for people of help themselves to all night – huge jars with brightly coloured sweets and customised bags with our name and dates.’

One of Amy’s favourite moments was arriving at the barn with the sun shining. ‘We spent a lot of time on the little things and it made a big difference – everyone loved them.’ Seeing the venue for the first time as she and her dad walked in was also a wonderful moment.

‘Dan and I had been the day before and added all our little touches, but the flowers and the chair covers were only done the morning of the wedding. All the candles were lit and it just took my breath away!’

Amy and Dan found Function Central online, and were impressed with the reviews and choice. ‘It was a very professional looking site - again working in design if someone has a cheap and nasty website it says to us that their service could be the same!’

They listened to a few of Function Central's wedding bands in London, and found it helpful to be able to choose by genre. ‘We both preferred a female vocalist and were really looking for a band that did a selection of old and new, something to get people up on the dance floor.’

‘We liked the samples of The Fandangos’ songs that were on the website and they had a good repertoire. They were also offering the DJ music in between there sets, to learn our first dance, bring all their equipment, and use their own lights – for us it meant the whole evening entertainment was sorted and we didn't have to worry about it.’

They also chose Function Central because, if anything went wrong, they’d definitely get a band on the night: ‘There are so many acts and they could cover if something happens to the first band – typical bride thinking of the worse-case scenario!

It was easy to use and once we got in touch they were very quick to respond and the whole process was really quite easy. The band were one of the first things we booked and probably one of the simplest.’

‘We were absolutely thrilled with the band and very pleased we had live music.’ They were particularly impressed with how organised the Fandangos wedding band were: ‘They arrived on time and set up very discreetly.’

‘They had learned our first dance and it sounded amazing and was such a beautiful touch to have that song sung for you, very special. From the moment they started everyone was up on the dance floor and it didn't clear until they had finished, after several encores and that's exactly what we were looking for from a wedding band.

There was a good mix of old and new but something for everyone and everyone was dancing to everything! Everyone raved about the band afterwards and we couldn't have been more pleased.’

Amy and Dan were delighted with Andrew, their photographer from Lightworks Photography: ‘Our pictures are amazing, they paint a brilliant picture of the day and we love them.’

Amy and Dan had their wedding video’d by Capture Your Day, and Amy was so pleased with the results that she recommends other couples do the same thing: ‘I cannot recommend getting a video enough, it really is a beautiful memento of the day and for us it captures parts we may of missed - people arriving at the venue, the drinks reception, the ceremony - which goes so quick its hard to take in, and it was great to have the speeches to listen back to.’

‘We were thinking of doing the flowers ourselves to save money, but I have to say I am so glad we didn't, the flowers really finished off the room – they looked amazing!’ Their florist, Carla at Elegant Stems, also provided candelabras and other pieces. ‘I'd found a wicker heart that was going to sit on the wall behind the top table during the meal and she decorated that, she was very open to working with what we wanted and within our budget.’

After such a successful wedding, Amy has a couple of tips for other brides: ‘Forward planning is the key – making sure you plan and get everything done in plenty of time makes those last few days before the wedding less stressful. Make sure you get on with your suppliers – we found everyone we had booked very easy to work with, we could phone them up or email and they would get straight back, they didn't mind if I asked a million questions. As a bride, you need to feel reassured that the people around you will make your day the most amazing they can - and for us they did!
