Real weddings

Colette and Adrian held their classic English hotel wedding at The Leyland Hotel in Preston, and danced the night away to soul & funk music from Downtown Underground.

Colette & Adrian

Before the day, Colette was worried about making sure everything would go to plan – she wanted to know that everything would be well coordinated and happen on time, so that the happy couple would be where they needed to be when they needed to be there.

The thing I’ll most remember about the day is the band – everyone said how much they’d enjoyed it. It topped the day off!

Fortunately, it all went smoothly on the day: ‘The hotel were really good. Once we got to the hotel, we didn’t have to think about anything and they sorted everything out. We didn’t even see the band arrive or set up because they just dealt with the hotel staff, so I didn’t have to worry about it.’

Colette and Adrian had a service at the church they attend, followed by a reception at The Leyland Hotel. ‘We chose The Leyland Hotel because it was close to the church... we didn’t want people having a long wait between the ceremony and the reception!'

They looked at about fifteen hotels, but The Leyland was an instant favourite: ‘It was a bit quirky, a bit more personal than your standard wedding hotel, and we chose it because of the staff – the way they greeted us, they were obviously interested... at other places you could tell they weren’t interested!’

How did they choose the band? ‘We knew from the start that we wanted a band rather than just a DJ, because we’re both quite heavily into our music.

We chose Downtown Underground because of their set list, as they could do both old and new music. They even included a few tunes by Jamiroquai, which is my husband’s favourite band! We also wanted a wedding band from North West.’

They’d been to wedding fairs and got some wedding band agency names, but in the end they just Googled and found us.

‘Function Central were very helpful – they were very efficient with getting through the contracts, and sorted out all the paperwork that the venue needed – all the electricity certificates and things like that. Before the day, one of the band members got in touch with a personal mobile number that we could use.’

The band was a hit with the guests: ‘The dancefloor was never empty – we had our first dance at eight o’clock and finished at one! The band kept things going!’ They also had a DJ between the band’s sets, keeping up the disco marathon.

They were also delighted with the flowers and the cake, which were supplied by family friends. ‘Obviously we had high expectations, which were definitely met!’

‘The fantastic cake was from Pink Vanilla, and the beautiful flowers were from The Gilded Lily.

The photographer was Clive Lawrence, and the video was by ABC Weddings.

The dress was from Preston Bridal Gallery, and the suits were from John Francis, with jewellery by Flo & Percy.

The car was supplied by Andrew’s Carriage Masters.

When we asked Colette if there was anything she would have done differently, she was adamant. ‘If I was to do it again I would not change a thing!’
